Celebrations erupted across the virtual and real worlds Sunday night as word spread that Osama bin Laden, the mastermind of the Sept. 11 attacks on the U.S., had been killed.
In Washington, visitors cheered and chanted outside the White House.
On Twitter and Facebook, Internet users logged celebratory messages from across the globe.
“Bin Laden is finally….dead! I’m the happiest arab on the planet!” tweeted @randajarrar just minutes after the news of his death broke around 10 p.m. Sunday night. Another tweeter, @majda72 wrote “as a Saudi I’m please about Bin Laden’s death.”
In a short speech late Sunday night, President Obama announced that Mr. bin Laden had been killed.
“Justice has been done,” Mr. Obama said .
