March 14: False witnesses issue to be tackled after STL indictment

Future parliamentary bloc MPs said Tuesday that the Lebanese judiciary should look into the issue of the “false witnesses” after the Special Tribunal for Lebanon (STL) issues its indictment.

Following its weekly meeting at PM Saad Hariri’s residence in downtown Beirut , the bloc issued a statement praising the Bkirki gathering’s position as well as the welcoming reaction from the High Islamic Council during its meeting in the Dar al-Fatwa.

March 8 politicians have called for the cabinet to charge the Judicial Council with investigating the issue of “false witnesses.” However, March 14 leaders have said that the regular judiciary should handle the matter.

The MPs requested the relevant judicial authorities to investigate the Wadi Khaled incident.

Tension escalated in the Wadi Khaled area of Akkar after four people died in an incident that took place at midnight Friday with the joint security forces in charge of monitoring the Lebanese-Syrian border.

On Friday, Maronite Patrirach Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir sponsored a meeting at Bkirki that included Christian March 14 figures. The gathering issued a statement calling on the Lebanese people to be aware of the challenges confronting the country.
