A day after President Michel Suleiman called for legalizing civil marriage in Lebanon to help build unity in the multi-faith country, 2 cabinet ministers jumped on the civil marriage bandwagon and voiced their support for it as an alternative. Lebanese President Michel Suleiman who is currently in Moscow on an official visit expressed on Sunday his support for a law allowing civil marriages, currently illegal in Lebanon, saying it will help build unity in the multi-faith country.
The first civil marriage held in Lebanon between Kholoud Sukkariyah and Nidal Darwish became a controversial subject supported by many and rejected by many others.
A Lebanese couple challenged the Lebanese sectarian system and became the first to have a civil marriage inside the Lebanese territories , according to a report by LBC. For Kholoud Sukkariyah and Nidal Darwish it wasn’t easy. They reportedly were required to do the following paperwork:
A group of young men and women protested on Monday outside parliament to demand the passage of the civil marriage law. But the security forces tried to stop them by force , detained them andtook them to the police station, according to a report by LBCI
