United Nations Special Coordinator for Lebanon Michael Williams expressed U.N.'s deep concerns Tuesday about the reports on Teir Felsay's explosion .
"We are following up on this matter closely since it is related to Resolution 1701 in anticipation of the results of the investigations conducted by UNIFIL and the Lebanese Army on the incident," said Williams after meeting PM-designate Saad Hariri on Tuesday.
While security sources have reported that as many as nine people were killed in the explosion that ripped through the garage of Nasser Issa’s home in south Lebanon, the Shiite group denied any fatalities and claimed that only one person was wounded.
Al Liwaa newspaper on Tuesday, citing an official security report, said nine people were killed and several others were wounded in the explosion that was the result of a left-over Israeli rocket from the 2006 war.
A security source reported that the explosion knocked down a three-story building that might have been used to store weapons.
A Lebanese army communique issued Tuesday said, however, that one person was wounded in the blast that was caused by a rocket explosion.
An-Nahar newspaper, for its part, quoted security sources as saying five people were killed in the blast that tore apart the house of the Hezbollah official and reported that the first story was blackened by a fire. The security sources said Issa was rushed to the hospital with serious injuries.
Voice of Lebanon radio station on the other hand reported a different version of the story. It quoted its correspondent in south Lebanon as saying that the explosion was the result of a blast that ripped through a rocket launcher at Issa's garage.
Spokeswoman for the U.N. peacekeeping force in southern Lebanon Yasmina Bouziane said UNIFIL was aware of the blast and was in contact with the Lebanese army. "We are looking into the circumstances of the incident," Bouziane said.
Despite Hezbollah's denial, the Israeli army said in a statement the explosion "proves again the presence of weapons forbidden in southern Lebanon" under U.N. Resolution 1701. "The Israeli army has asked the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) to launch an investigation," the statement said.
Last July another explosion in an abandoned building in Khirbit Selim in southern Lebanon was said to have been caused by a fire in a secret Hezbollah arms depot. Hezbollah said at the time that the building housed ammunition leftover from Israeli attacks on Lebanon.
Regardless what happened yesterday , the presence of illegal arms in the hands of a party that is under the influence of a foreign power is dangerous for Lebanon and undermines our independence , sovereignty and freedom
