Loyalty to the Resistance bloc MP Nawwaf Moussawi said in a Sunday interview on NBN television that the Saudi decision to end conflict with Syria serves Arab interests and “the new approach to Arab relations improves the chances of having a unified position in the confrontation with Israel.”
Moussawi praised the “strong strategic nature of the historic Saudi-Syrian alliance.” He added that he hopes Arab countries will not “target the Resistance,” explaining that resistance is the only choice. He added that his bloc is in constant communication with Prime Minister-designate Saad Hariri and that “most meetings were disclosed.” According to Moussawi, the US is using the “Lebanon card” in order to advance its own interests.

2:57pm Turkey's "Anatolian Eagle" joint aerial exercise has been postponed this year because of Ankara's decision to exclude Israel, the Israeli army said in a statement on Sunday. "The exercise Anatolian Eagle which was planned to take place in Turkey from October 12 to 23 has been postponed until further notice. The exercise has been postponed as a result of Turkey's decision to change the list of participating countries, thus excluding Israel. This decision came several days before the start of the exercise," it said, without giving further details.
The exercise was to involve Turkish, Israeli and several other NATO air forces. The Israeli media said the decision to postpone the exercises came after the United States pulled out once Turkey had excluded Israel. Israeli public radio said that this year's maneuvers were to include practicing aerial attacks in Turkish airspace near borders with Syria, Iraq and Iran.

2:37pm During the opening of an electoral law workshop in Broummana on Sunday, Interior Minister Ziad Baroud said that the delay in the cabinet formation might lead to postponing the municipal elections, which he said “is something we do not want.”
“We should carry out major modifications in order for the elections to be held on time,” Baroud said, adding that modifying the municipal law cannot be completed in a comprehensive manner as it relates to the issue of administrative decentralization. He stressed however that the law should be altered to adopt proportionality. “Administrative decentralization and the municipal law are complementary, and they should be discussed in addition to the parliamentary electoral law after the municipal elections, since the three laws are fundamentally important for Lebanon’s future,” Baroud said.

12:30pm Egyptian police on Sunday seized 750 kilograms of explosives they believe were destined to be smuggled to Palestinian militants in the Gaza Strip, a security official said. Police officers found 500 kilograms of TNT packed into 12 plastic bags in the Ahrash region of the Sinai peninsula near Gazap, the official said. Another 250 kilograms as well as some automatic weapons were found in the Sukkariya area, also in north Sinai. Palestinians use a network of tunnels linking Egypt with Gaza to smuggle food and other essential goods, as well as weapons, to evade an Israeli blockade since the Islamist Hamas took over the enclave in June 2007.

12:05pm Viewpoints concerning the Syrian-Saudi summit were exchanged between Hizbullah chief Hassan Nasrallah and Druze leader Walid Jumblat at a recent meeting. Nasrallah and Jumblat also assessed during their Friday night meeting the regional situation in the wake of the high-level meeting in Damascus between Syrian President Bashar al-Assad and Saudi King Abdullah, according to well-informed sources. They said the two men believed the summit had a positive impact in terms of a speedy formation of a new national unity government, which Hizbullah considers "will protect the country and the resistance at this stage."
The two sides also reportedly agreed on a Cabinet lineup based on the 15-10-5 formula. Hizbullah sources told the daily an-Nahar in remarks published Sunday that the meeting confirmed that Jumblat's "shift in political strategy is irreversible."
Nasrallah and Jumblat were said to have welcomed any initiative aimed at helping Cabinet formation including outcome of the Saudi-Syrian summit. Their stance came during a meeting Friday night attended by MP Akram Shehayeb, Jumblat's son Taymour, and Hizbullah official Wafiq Safa. According to a joint statement, Nasrallah and Jumblat discussed the local and regional situation and stressed the positivity of the two-day meeting between King Abdullah and Assad. The two leaders also stressed the importance of Arab-Arab openness and the need to overcome crises in the Arab and Islamic world. Nasrallah and Jumblat also agreed to move forward in all measures that consolidate the atmosphere of reconciliation and on the necessity of removing all obstacles preventing cabinet formation.
11:58am Drug dealer Haitham Hamad was seriously wounded in a clash at daybreak Sunday with a police patrol in the West Bekaa town of Sultan Yaqoub. Another drug smuggler managed to escape. The customs patrol confiscated the vehicle and its load, after the other smugglers escaped to unknown destination.
