Jounieh, just north of Beirut
He added : “It is not acceptable that we jeopardize the safety of the South by allowing chaos and negligence to spread”
Geagea according to observers was referring to Hezbollah which is insisting on keeping its arms , claiming it is only for defending Lebanon against Israel. Geagea was also referring to the events of May 2008 when Hezbollah pointed its guns against the Lebanese people resulting in the deaths of hundreds of Lebanese. Geagea was also referring to the use of arms by the Iranian and Syrian backed Hezbollah-led opposition for political gain.
“We cannot control the Israeli intentions, but we can control the way that we respond to them’ Geagea insisted
Geagea slammed the Hezbollah-led opposition by saying that it has taken Lebanon hostage.
"The Lebanese state in its entirety has been taken hostage” He said
Addressing the issue of the cabinet formation, Geagea warned that if the opposition was seeking to obstruct the cabinet formation, then President Michel Suleiman and PM-designate Saad Hariri should "make up their minds and prevent the transformation of the government formation crisis into a crisis of rule and regime."
“Lebanon should not be left without a cabinet and the majority must not succumb to the conditions of the minority.” He added
Geagea stressed that “ National unity requires limiting arms to the state’s military institutions and having one authority responsible for war decisions; national unity is not about dividing portfolios in the cabinet”
Geagea insisted that if a unity cabinet cannot be formed then , “the majority must form a cabinet that represents it, and the minority must play the role of the opposition in accordance to democratic norms”
Geagea assured the Lebanese that the Cedar Revolution is alive and well .” The cedar Revolution is immortal, just like the Cedars of Lebanon”. He said adding : As long as the March 14 supporters are united then the Cedar Revolution is at its best, and if you saw the alliance disturbed you must know that this is out of vitality and not weakness
Observers described Geagea’s speech as a response to General Michel Aoun who has aligned himself with Hezbollah and who has been imposing unreasonable conditions for participation in the cabinet and as a warning to president Michel Suleiman and PM designate Saad Hariri not to succumb to the pressure from the opposition
