President Barack is heading to Saudi Arabia on June 3 to discuss Mideast peace with the Saudi Arabian King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, press secretary Robert Gibbs said in Washington, DC. Before heading to Cairo to address the Muslim world.
The parliamentary elections are scheduled to take place in Lebanon on June 7th. The two main competing rivals in this election are the “ March 8th” group, which is led by the Iranian and Syrian backed Hezbollah and the “March 14th” group, which led the Cedar Revolution on March 14 following the assassination of Lebanon's former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri. March 14th calls for a free, sovereign and Independent Lebanon and wants a balanced relationship with Syria based on mutual respect.
The US has already provided over 1 billion dollars to Lebanon in aid since 2005 and is showing increased interest in the upcoming elections.
There are 128 contested seats in the election and the Hezbollah backed March 8th bloc would only need to win 65 seats to claim control of the parliament. March 14 currently holds the majority in the parliament. The possibility of a Hezbollah victory terrifies Washington, because the Obama administration does not want to see a repeat of the Gaza situation, where Hamas, another Iranian backed militant group tool control of the strip.
Hezbollah was accused in an article by the German magazine Der Spiegel of being behind the assassination of Hariri, but Hezbollah leader sayyed Hassan Nasrallah denied any involvement in Hariri's murder and called Der Spiegel's report "extremely dangerous" and accused Israel of being behind it. Erich Follath, the author of the article responded during an interview with Asharq al-Awsat newspaper by declaring that all the documents used in the report were original and that he is convinced about the authenticity of the report.
"The documents that I reviewed during preparation of my report were original, not copies," Follath said and stressed "I verified every word before publishing the report."
