A Syrian source told NOW Lebanon on Wednesday that the appointment of the Syrian ambassador to Lebanon might be postponed until 2009 because the date was not “sacred”. He added that the postponement was connected to Lebanese political and media positions.
He accused the Future Movement of creating disparity between Lebanon and the appointment of the Syrian ambassador through media. This appointment could not be accomplished, he said, amid the problems between his country and March 14 alliance - the Future Movement in particular - and with the presence of a prime minister that supports the coalition.
He also said that some called for punishing the cabinet’s alliance by not giving it “honor” and appointing an ambassador during its rule.
The source added that the leaks of names such as Deputy Foreign Minister Faisal al-Miqdad and another university instructor, aimed to exclude them at the request of Syrian leadership.
He said that there were unpublicized disagreements between Deputy President Farouq al-Sharaa and Foreign Minister Walid Mouallem. Sharaa held the FM position prior to being promoted to VP.
He added that the appointed ambassador will be a shock to the people of Lebanon because he will be unknown in order to affirm that the, “historical relations between the two countries were more important than the ambassador himself,” who, he said, will only be assigned protocol tasks.
