It has been only months since the Iranian and Syrian backed Hezbollah attacked the Muslim Sunnites in Beirut, the Druze in Mount Lebanon to take over Lebanon. Hezbollah continued with its aggression in Bekaa and Tripoli against the Sunnites until very recently.

"Iran never helped one Lebanese party against the others," said the leader of the Free Patriotic Movement.

"Iran is especially helping Lebanon today in confronting its problems and achieving national unity," Aoun told a joint news conference with Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki.

Aoun dismissed criticism at home about his visit to the Islamic republic.

He said he was "surprised and astonished" at criticism from Lebanese Christian factions about the visit.

Aoun, who arrived in Tehran on Sunday is due to hold talks with President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and parliament Speaker Ali Larijani

The Iranian Revolutionary Guards created Hezbollah in the early eighties and have since been arming , training , funding and politically supporting it.

Antoine Haddad a Lebanese political observer told Ya Libnan. "Aoun is stuck . His memorandum of understanding with Hezbollah is forcing him to take these positions of praising Iran and Syria and attacking Saudi Arabia. He is trying to earn the trust of Hezbollah and its allies because he knows no one on the other side trusts him anymore and he lost all their respect." " Haddad added " Hezbollah , Iran and Syria are using Aoun to achieve their objectives in Lebanon . He is giving them the Christian cover to act as the state within a state and do whatever they want in Lebanon , starting with the war in 2006 ..to the occupation of downtown Beirut .. to the attacks against the rest of the Lebanese last May and as recently as last month in Tripoli and Bekaa "
