The agreement to establish diplomatic relations between Lebanon and Syria was reached in Damascus on Wednesday during the summit meeting between Lebanese president Michel Suleiman and his counterpart Basher al Assad.
Prior to the 2006 war the Lebanese rival leaders held several national dialogue sessions and reached agreements on several issues . The talks ended when Hezbollah kidnapped the 2 Israeli soldiers which led to the 2006 war.
Commenting on the agreement to demarcate the Lebanese Syrian borders Jumblatt criticized the decision of delaying the demarcation of the Shebaa farms until it is liberated . Jumblatt reminded As Safir that "during the 2006 dialogue talks and based on the recommendation of Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah we all agreed that instead of demarcation the Lebanese should ask Syria to define Shebaa Farms". We all agreed that Syria should issue a document that confirms the Lebanese identity of the farms and we all agreed that Lebanon will forward this to the UN and the demarcation will follow . Jumblatt added " It looks like Damascus decided to ignore this issue "
Commenting on the speech of Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah marking the second anniversary of the end of the 2006 war Jumblatt said : "In addition to the wounds inflicted ( by Hezbollah ) on Beirut and Mt Lebanon on May 7, 2008, I wish the (Hezbollah ) hero of Bint Jbeil ( during the 2006 war with Israel) did not die fighting our people in Mt Lebanon .... If my condolences are accepted , I would like to offer them to his folks and all the folks of those killed in Beirut and Mt Lebanon"
Hezbollah invaded west Beirut in May and tried to do the same in the Druze strongholds of Mt Lebanon but failed badly after losing over 150 fighters in the battles of Barouk, Chouifat , Alley, Aitat, Baysour etc...
