beirut susnset.jpgWhether on a beach in the midst of Beirut, from a hill top in the humid island of Montreal or on a terrace in the busy streets of Milan, the majesty of mother Earth creates a spiritual convection that is beyond description. It is not just the sheer panoramic beauty of the sight; it is the emotional bond that one relates to the ending of a day and to the hope that another shall be. Is there anything that compares to the feeling that an individual gets when confronted with the echoing noise of crickets while sitting by a calm lake?

Unfortunately, it is sad to see that all the majesty of mother Earth is not enough to thwart us from destroying the very habitat that gave us life. Today, 40% of the Arctic has thinned down to less than 3 feet thick, we have witnessed the cracking and separation of countless ice shelves the size of Rhode Island, climates around the world have suffered changes so dramatic that entire Ecosystems have been destroyed and many peer reviewed articles have stated that in the past twenty years the extinction rate has grown fifty fold.

All these facts are astonishing; one would think that current media outlets would be covering these developments. Shouldn't politicians be taking it upon themselves to make people conscious of all these warning signs? Well, I guess not. I guess to many, the fact that Greenland is expected in the next thirty years to break up, melt and propel billions of litters of water into the Ocean not so big of a deal. Then again, why is all this so worrisome? It's only estimated that one hundred million people are going to vanish.

Imagine the lost lives; imagine the global repercussion of millions of displaced refugees and the destruction of countless cities. From the latter is it obvious that the former is simply unacceptable but even more unacceptable is the purposely media seeded ideology that scientists do not agree on the fact that greenhouse gasses emitted are helping warm up the planet. In fact, most, if not all scientifically approved assessments agree that global warming is in effect and that green house gasses are the main cause.

Most scientists also agree that the consequences will be so dramatic that it will change the course of humanity. Even more astonishing is the fact that in 2001 the environmental adviser to the President of the leading nation in pollution, the United States, refused to acknowledge that Global warming is more of a reality than a theory. I think it is important to mention that the adviser happens to be Philip Coney an ex-employee of the institute of petroleum who happens to be today employed by Exxon Mobile.

Furthermore, it is unequivocal that world media has portrayed being environmentally conscious to be inversely proportional to the economy and thus, in their opinion, one must choose the Earth or Wealth. It happens to be that ecologically responsible research and development increase economic benefits and assures that global wealth can be useful considering without an Earth, wealth is of relative unimportance. Taking a look at countries who have adopted environmentally sound policies one can identify striving industries, growth and also a longer life expectancy.

In Conclusion, maybe it's time to put away our intimidating V8 SUV. Maybe we should carpool a day or two a week, turn off the TV when we aren't home, recycle and invest in green technologies. Heck, if it can assure that I can see another one of those sunsets, I might bike to work tomorrow.
