Many Palestinian refugee families escaped from the camp to take refuge in Sidon city

The fighting is in the main street in the densely populated Ein al-Hilweh camp and is confined to this camp only.

Yesterday Fatah, the mainstream Palestinian faction, has captured Hussam Maarouf a terrorist ringleader in the southern refugee camp of Ein al-Hilweh and turned him over to the Lebanese authorities, a security source said Friday. This has angered Jund al-Sham because Maarouf is a key member of their organization.

There was no immediate word on any casualties from Friday's clashes.

Jund el Sham is associated with Fatah al-Islam , the terror group that fought a deadly battle with the Lebanese army last year in the north Lebanon refugee camp of Nahr al-Bared. The militants are an offshoot of Usbat al-Ansar another terrorist group in the Ein el Helweh camp.

Jund el Sham is a Syrian based group . Its name is derived from the greater Syrian term of Bilad el Sham , which includes Jordan , Iraq, Lebanon, Palestine ( present day Israel) and Syria. It has Palestinian and Lebanese fighters .

Several Palestinian leaders have entered the Ein el Helweh camp at around midnight to try and end the fighting . But according to security forces the fighting continued.
