Kuwait's public prosecutor on Monday renewed the arrest of six Shiite activists, including two former members of parliament, on charges of suspicion of membership of an alleged underground opposition group, a lawyer said
The move by the predominantly Sunni Kuwait was also denounced pro-Iranian Lebanese Shiite cleric Afif al-Nabulisi, who said al-Matouq's arrest provoked "concern" within Shiite religious circles in Lebanon.
"We urge the political leadership of Kuwait to speed up the release of Sheikh Hussein al-Maatouq."
Hezbollah Kuwait
Defense lawyer of the Kuwaiti detainees Abdul Karim bin Haider said the detainees were questioned by the prosecutors on allegations that they joined the so called Hezbollah Kuwait.
"They accused them of joining Hezbollah Kuwait to spread ideas for the destruction of the basic foundations of the society through illegal means, which amounts to overthrowing the government," the lawyer said.
"They were also accused of spreading false reports that weaken Kuwait's foreign position," the lawyer added.
Kuwait appeals for unity and calm
Kuwait's government appealed for unity on Monday amid concern about the rising sectarian tension in this Gulf state which was prompted by the Shiite rally and mourning of Mughniyeh and the subsequent actions by the parliament
The rally caused uproar in the oil-rich emirate because Mughniyeh was considered a terrorist in Kuwait for hijacking Kuwaiti planes two decades ago.
"The cabinet urges citizens and the media to avoid issues that could undermine our national unity and the solidarity of the Kuwaiti people," said a statement issued after the weekly cabinet meeting.
"We should work together to safeguard Kuwait's security and stability," said the government statement
