"The visit, does not mean any change in our convictions," Siniora was quoted as saying on Friday.
This was in reference to the fact that the ruling parliament majority has accused Syria of being behind the assassination of Lebanon's former PM Rafik Hariri on Feb. 14, 2005.
Siniora added: " As a founding member of the Arab League Lebanon will definitely be invited to the Arab summit scheduled for March 29-30 in Damascus "
Siniora stressed the importance of correcting the Lebanese-Syrian relations
Syria does not recognize Lebanon as an independent state , refuses to demarcate the border with Lebanon and refuses to establish diplomatic relations. This is what Siniora was referring to .
Siniora said he is against boycott of Syria
On the other hand he said that Syria seems to have a hand in all the troubled areas of the region and this needs to be corrected.
As an example Siniora added that Saudi Arabia is upset with Syria over its disruption of the Mecca agreement between Hamas and Abbas
Invitations to Arab summit are usually addressed to heads of states. But Lebanon has been without a president since November 23, 2007 when former president Emil Lahoud ended his term and Siniora has assumed the presidential powers in accordance with the constitution.
Lebanon's Iranian and Syrian backed Hezbollah-led opposition has refused to elect Army chief General Michel Suleiman as president unless their basket of demands is agreed to by the ruling majority. The basket includes a government of national unity in which the opposition will have a veto power, approval of all the government top appointments and holding parliamentary elections based on 1960 electoral law.
The new election date for a president which is set for March 11, is the 15th postponement by the pro-Syrian speaker Nabih Berri. Most politicians are predicting a 16th postponement on or before March 11.
