He pointed out to his allies the importance of finding Hariri killers adding that such an acceptance by the opposition will remove the excuse of US involvement in Lebanon’s internal affairs.

Yakan stressed that “the opposition is innocent of any wrongdoing with regards to Hariri’s assassination and related matters”. He added “The prove is the fact that neither UN chief investigator Detlev Mehlis nor Serge Brammertz pointed any fingers at any member of the opposition.

Yakan concluded “ the fact that the opposition is innocent and Syria’s declaration of innocence and interest in finding out the criminals behind Hariri crime , it should be in everyone’s interest to have the tribunal to find the criminals and prosecute them”.

Yakan pointed out that it is not in the interest of the opposition to be painted in the corner as the suspect in this crime . He described the tribunal as a” sword pointed at the neck of the opposition “

The international tribunal is the main sticking issue between the opposition and the government. Six opposition cabinet members quit the night before the issue of the tribunal was going to be discussed .

Chief UN investigator Detlev Mehlis did point fingers at Syria and its Lebanese allies as suspects in the murder of Hariri . This has lead people to believe that the pro- Syrian opposition is trying to oppose the tribunal to protect Syria .
