Resolution 1680 was welcomed with relief
The resolution which calls on Syria to forge full diplomatic relations with Lebanon and to Demarcate the border between the two countries was hailed by the Lebanese leaders, but Syria and its allies criticized it.
The Iranian foreign minister Manouchehr Mottaki made a surprise visit to Damascus to show support for its ally. Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, who criticized the resolution traveled to Damascus to meet Iran's foreign minister.
Iran, which has been accused by its Arab population of discrimination and mistreatment is Syria's main ally. Syria has been cracking down on the Ahawazi Arabs to please Iran and recently arrested 8 Ahwazi Arabs and deported one of them to Iran. According to British Ahwazi Friendship Society (BAFS) the Syrian authorities have released three of the Ahwazi Arab refugees, apparently on the instruction of the Iranian government.
Both, Iran and Syria are facing problems from the UN. Iran for its Nuclear activity and Syria for its lack of cooperation with Lebanon.
