The Russian defense ministry has denied responsibility for an attack on a neighborhood in the Syrian city of Aleppo which wounded a young boy whose rescue was filmed and shared widely on social media.

The image of the 5-year old stunned boy, sitting in an ambulance caked with dust and with blood on his face, captured the horror that has beset the war-torn city.

The Russian defense ministry said in a statement Friday it never targets populated areas and that rebels themselves hit urban areas in order to derail humanitarian efforts there.

The ministry also said the footage of the boy’s rescue showed windows in the house next door intact, indicating that the boy’s house was not targeted by an airstrike but was hit with a mine that rebels use.

Not saying they’re not at fault here, but I met a handful of Syrian refugees in the Caribbean. They were from the destroyed city of Homs, they tried to make it there for as long as possible. They told me the city was split in half, anti-ASSad and Pro-ASSad. Many incidents were mentioned that involved the rebels firing crude missiles from within densely populated areas. They recalled a few times where the missiles fell short of their intended targets and actually struck their side of the town. They said they were getting hit from both sides and decided to book it out of there. Now they’re selling gyros on a little island far from home.

And a much more comfortable spot no doubt. With real tourists too.
And yes, when they start firing wobbly RPG’s around in Tripoli the same results of missing mostly, and hitting anything else, are fairly common. Taking ‘War’ into cities is the absolute worst thing to ever do, especially when the desire to just shoot a weapon is incurably high in those who do it – no matter what the weapon is – or what city. Watch them spray a whole street with a machine gun – and sometimes aimed at Allah too. It’s like gravity never existed – except for those few who got themselves or their buddies. Even cops can’t guarantee a bullet won’t go to a wrong spot – sometimes remarkably far away.
And when there’s so much of it going on that everyone hides, who knows who the shooter is?
You can’t just waltz in after and say: ‘Hi, I’m your independent inspector of incidents. Please stand outside the yellow tape a few days.’
I’d say after 6 years, only verifiable nut-bars are left guarding their rubble.
