Germany’s anti-Islam PEGIDA movement staged rallies in several cities across Europe on Saturday to protest against the arrival of hundreds of thousands of migrants from the Middle East and Africa.

The movement, whose name stands for Patriotic Europeans Against the Islamisation of the West, originated in the eastern German city of Dresden in 2014, with supporters seizing on a surge in asylum seekers to warn that Germany risks being overrun by Muslims.

After almost fizzling out early last year, the movement has regained momentum amid deepening public unease over whether Germany can cope with the 1.1 million migrants who arrived in the country during 2015.

The alleged involvement of migrants in assaults on women in Cologne on New Year’s Eve has also spurred PEGIDA, which says it is proof that German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s welcoming stance to refugees is flawed.

“We must succeed in guarding and controlling Europe’s external borders as well as its internal borders once again,” PEGIDA member Siegfried Daebritz told a crowd on the banks of the River Elbe who chanted “Merkel must go!”.

Police in Dresden declined to estimate the number of protesters. German media put the number at up to 8,000, well below the 15,000 originally expected by police.

Hundreds of counter-demonstrators also marched through Dresden under the motto “Solidarity instead of exclusion”, holding up placards saying “No place for Nazis”.

Far-right groups see Europe’s refugee crisis as an opportunity to broadcast their anti-immigrant message. There were 208 rallies in Germany in the last quarter of 2015, up from 95 a year earlier, Interior Ministry data showed.

CALAIS, PRAGUE

Protests also took place on Saturday in other cities, including Amsterdam, Prague and the English city of Birmingham.

In Calais, in northern France, more than a dozen people were arrested during a protest that was attended by more than a hundred people despite being banned, local authorities said.

Thousands of migrants fleeing war and poverty in Africa and the Middle East camp out in Calais, hoping for a chance to make the short trip across the English Channel to Britain.

In Prague, an estimated 2,200 people including both supporters and opponents of Pegida held a series of rival demonstrations around the Czech capital. Police had to intervene in one march when supporters of the migrants came under attack from around 20 people who threw bottles and stones.

In Warsaw, hundreds of people waved Polish flags and chanted “England and France are in tears, that’s how tolerance ends”.

“We’re demonstrating against the Islamisation of Europe, we’re demonstrating against immigration, against an invasion,” Robert Winnicki, leader of Poland’s far-right Ruch Narodowy (National Movement), told demonstrators.

The Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary and Poland have together taken a tough stance on migration and have been largely opposed to taking in significant numbers of refugees.

The slightly Communist but more Socialist side is not entirely wrong….

            Nah. You’re too generous and even-handed. 🙂

Is she a Communist (Marxist?), than it is another game……

          • 5thDrawer

You don’t need to be a raving Communist (or Religionist) to accept and recognize some humanist thoughts ‘for’ the good of people. If we admit we want ‘social societies’ to exist, then why can’t they be sociable – even to themselves? What is WRONG about actually ‘performing’ some equality of humans, when it’s the ‘big ideal’ being mouthed??
Assume the ages of conquest really killed off a Billion … and yet we still have 7 Billion. Imagine how badly abused the planet would be now with the potential 10 or so – or will be when it gets there – when the EDUCATION FACTOR is the worst enemy of social behavior.

That what this poster is all about – “With humanity towards your dark side” and “Against hatred and incitement – no ifs or buts”, against the movement of Patriotic Europeans.

The whole concept of ‘Assimilation’ of one culture into another is supposed to result in the eventual mental expansion of the ‘Life Experience’ of each … The European Way has been doing this for Centuries, and finally leads to an Era where peoples speak more than their own languages and travel freely to visit each other’s countries, in an Economic Market as common to all as possible. They accept each other’s differences, which does not mean they are forced to follow the differences in their own lifestyles.
This has been the ‘Democratic outcome’ of thought allowed to be expressed.
NOW, injected roughly into the ‘scene’, is a ‘culture’ which is not based in the same premise OR the same historical experiences of free thinking. AND it proclaims it’s desire just as roughly to ‘change’ everyone back to a feudal time Europeans left behind, and it says it wants to force everyone to keep their mouths shut, along with how to think – with ancient inhumane punishments for not doing that.
In other words, it is a ‘WAR’ by an invading culture NO-ONE wants – and that includes the ones who ran from it to Europe, but are dragged back in by the ‘radical’ and most heavily brainwashed from the ‘old culture’ …. elements who tagged along to keep the fear, and feudal subjugation by that, in the minds of that cultural experience.
WHY would anyone EXPECT those with European Experience to CAVE IN and allow it to happen?
They know their histories, after all, and much prefer the newer concept to the old.

Already in 16.10.2010 die Bundeskanzlerin Angela Merkel perplexed everyone with her opinion that the multi-culti is dead. (Merkel hält Multikulti für “absolut gescheitert”)

The same “Mama Merkel” that proclaimed “Wir schaffen das!” (We make it!)…..

Today the Germans are dissatisfied with Angela Merkel and her government.
The majority of respondents believe that the government no longer has the situation under control.

“SPD dual leadership Sigmar and Gabriel” The irritation between the SPD and the Union on the commonly agreed “asylum package II” elicit harsh criticism from the ranks of the opposition. The Left even speaks of a “Dilettantenstadl”.

Furthermore, the confusion about SPD position: “We do not question the asylum “package II.”
That suits mainly the AfD in the cards….

Asylum, in my mind, does not equate with Immigration.
Asylum is a ‘refuge’ for those in need of it. Usually refugees. It is temporary.
And of course, that means ‘real’ refugees.

          • Matrix

That’s the sad point, many don’t understand the meaning of Asylum.
The terms asylum-seeker and refugee are often confused: an asylum-seeker is someone who says he or she is a refugee, but whose claim has not yet been definitively evaluated.

However immigration is the movement of people into a destination country (“we want go germany”) to which they are not native or do not possess its citizenship in order to settle or reside there.

The ‘real’ refugees are always granted asylum status!

Thousands of adventurers are expelled through smaller airports without coverage by the media – it does not raise the viewing figures….

But…..but……but…..Islam is a peaceful religion. All you have to do is obey, feed them, provide a free income and a few Euro hotties. After all, they are entitled.

“20 people who threw bottles and stones” …. There’s ALWAYS that few brain-warped FEW who make things sour for everyone, isn’t there? The ‘violence factor’ creates the aggravations by both ‘sides’ of an opinion, and shows up the anarchist whims of those people who feel that smacking OR raping people is the only ‘way’ to get their points across – if they have a valid point at all – which they usually don’t until there’s enough of them doing something illegal to ‘create the point’.

“While the West is emptying the Middle East,”…., what about the Russian contribution of emptying the Middle East?

How did the russian contributed to help the Syrian refugees, the same way that Saudi Arabia?

‘Russia refuses to take back “unscrupulous refugees” who have managed to get over the border to Norway, said the country’s Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov at a major annual press conference in Moscow. Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov complained that the refugees who are trying to get across the border to Finland and Norway in the north of Russia is “unconscionable”. According to the minister, they have lied to the Russian authorities. – It’s about people who have arrived to Russia and stated that its purpose work or visits to relatives, said Lavrov in Moscow today on a big press conference. But the real purpose was to get to Norway. – We have no interest to take back people who are lying to us, he continued. They have violated our laws. Russian and Norwegian authorities have now set up a joint task force to develop concrete proposals. – We have agreed with the Norwegian authorities to take a break and work out a system that solves this problem in a way that satisfies both Russia and Norway, he said.’ (source: yle.fi)
