With a ceasefire now in effect after a months-long battle for the last Syrian rebel stronghold on the Lebanese border, Hezbollah has said it will stop fighting in Syria, a diplomatic source has told Lebanon’s Daily Star.

The unnamed source said the group informed Syrian authorities that once the fighting for Zabadani was over, it would end its combat in Syria where analysts say it has significantly strengthened pro-government forces since 2013.

In July, pro-government forces launched an offensive to try to recapture Zabadani, about 40km outside Damascus, which prompted a rebel alliance to besiege Fuaa and Kafraya, the only remaining government-held villages in Idlib province whose residents are Shia.

On Sunday, a ceasefire went into effect between pro-government forces and rebels in Zabadani in exchange for ceasefires in Fuaa and Kafraya.

On Tuesday, the ceasefire was reportedly extended, although the warring parties have not specified when it will end and rival sides will continue negotiations for a broader truce.

It was not clear from the unconfirmed report whether Hezbollah had already stopped fighting in Syria or would soon, though experts say the group’s exit from the civil war would not be a surprise.

“Hezbollah does not have a natural vocation to be involved in this conflict, but had to act nevertheless – and significantly – to protect its vital interests, due to the deficiencies of the Lebanese self-defence capacity and the weakening of the Syrian regular army,” Filippo Dionigi, a Leverhulme Fellow at the London School of Economics’ Middle East Centre and an expert on Hezbollah, told Middle East Eye.

De-escalating at a well-timed moment, Dionigi said, would give the group an opportunity to maintain its public face and assert that it had defended Lebanon successfully.

“As the “divine victory” propaganda of 2006 has shown, Hezbollah not only knows how to fight but also how ‘to win’ wars,” he said, referring to leader Hassan Nasrallah’s comments after the 2006 Lebanon War that the group had had a “divine victory” over Israel.

Nasrallah, who is reportedly scheduled to give a speech this Friday, has framed his group’s intervention as one which protects Lebanon from the Islamic State militant group, a notion that has raised tensions in the country where many Sunnis back the fight against Assad.

But also critical for the group is the role the Syrian government has played as a conduit for weapons and funding between Iran and Hezbollah and, while also providing a safe haven for Hezbollah training camps and weapons storage, according to a report from the Washington DC-based Institute for the Study of War.

The exact size and scope of the group’s activities in Syria has been murky. In July, Foreign Policy magazine, quoting Western officials and analysts, have put the number of fighters on the ground at between 6,000 and 8,000 and some reports suggest the group has suffered the heaviest death tolls in its history inside Syrian territory.

While it is difficult to know exactly what Hezbollah plans to do next in Syria, Dionigi said a “progressive disengagement from this conflict is probably the main strategic horizon that Hezbollah may contemplate at least once all its interests in Syria are secured.”

  1. Lol they are only running with their tails tucked in coz the Russians have come to save their shite behinds.
They must’ve been on the verge of collapse hence why the ruskies decided to lend an even bigger hand.

    1. The Russian are stepping up their involvement because France and the UK have said they are going to step up their involvement, Cameron have even hinted at UK hitting Syrian government targets. Also Turkey were raising their voices about creating buffer zones, an idea that has all but disappeared since Russia step up its involvement.

Russia will not allow another Libya to take place in Syria, if that means boots on the ground, well Russia is clearly prepare to take that step.

But only after ‘vetoing’ every other resolution at the UN regarding any intervention for 5 years.

  4. The source said no such thing. The source only said that Hezbollah wouldn’t be involve in frontal assaults, that means recapturing villages, towns and city an apparently only when they have taken Zabadani , which more or less secures Lebennon boarders and secure the supply lines, I suspect there are a few other villages and towns that will have to be recapture from rebels in the area as well.

It doesn’t means that Hezbollah won’t continue to patrol these areas and keep them free from rebel groups and keep their supply corridors open.

Yeah after losing 1,400 fighters lmao

      2. cook2half Avatar

1,400 out of 20,000 fighters is not bad? Let’s also not forget this includes senior fighters, commanders, and even some that were close to Nasrallah such as Jihad Mughniyeh and Laqees.

        1. Good point. There are around 1.5 million Shiites in Lebanon. Most are pro HA but not all. But let’s count them all in. That is about an eighth of Israel’s population.
If IDF lost that many, there would be riots in the streets and inquiries and firings and tribunals, like post 1973. or post Sabra/Shatila.
But Shiites know better than to protest. They know it will do no good and get them into trouble.

The way you twist facts is sickening
        same propaganda made in Mazzeh
But I repeat and will keep repeating, most people know the truth and your propaganda fools no one but the feeble minds in dahyeh and Tehran (not Damascus or Baghdad anymore)

        1. Oh really? Propaganda? Twist facts? Do the numbers? See you only look at things racially. You are beyond the ability of looking at things as fact regardless of who and what. Il tell you what people like you and O are like and it can be summed up by relating it to the tragedy that happened at the haj yesterday. Two crowds of the same people coming from opposite directions collided with each other resulting in a stampede which has left over 700 people dead. Why? Because those organising blocked off another path that should have been taken. Ironic isn’t it? What is it you are defending? The whole world is trying to rid the planet of this filth.

          1. MekensehParty Avatar
            MekensehParty

Of course whoever puts you in your place is an Isis fan. It’s crazy that every time I reveal your Mazzeh propaganda you immediately call me the next Caliph.
You want to do the numbers? You’re not even close to the numbers of fanatics killed by the US in the past 4 years since these fanatics turned their guns on Assad (who gave them safe passage in and out of Iraq for 10 years to fight Americans)… You think you defended Lebanon? lol. If it wasn’t because of the US in the skies you would already be shawarma to your old friends.
Nobody stopped Isis but the American planes, that’s the only military truth. And now Isis is pinned down. They can attack Assad, they cant attack the Kurds. They can attack Iranian militias in Iraq, but they wont enter Baghdad.
You Hezbollah faraqih couldn’t take a town the size of a Costco parking (and they’re not even Isis in there) and you repeat the same propaganda refrain of divine victories.
            Laughable!!!

          2. Where have I accused you of being in isis fan? See this is your problem. Like I said you look at things racially. We are in the here and now and my concern is lebanon. Fact is lebanon is the only country that went on the offensive against isis. Now the world is trying to catch up. Ask yourself why all of a sudden everyone is rushing in? And please stop watching fox news and making it out the Americans saved the world. The only reason everyone is reacting now is because we have a refugee epidemic all over Europe. Look at the Arab world we’ve become a laughing stock scattered all over the place.

            MekensehParty

When you say for no reason whatsoever: “What is it you are defending? The whole world is trying to rid the planet of this filth.”
Don’t you mean that I’m defending Isis?
Unless you mean the Sunnis by “filth” and you move on to say that my logic is based on racism (again without any single proof or argument supporting your bullshit, typical empty Mazzeh propaganda baseless accusations).
Of course you totally ignore the truth that I stated above, that when it comes to the number of Isis killed, your faraqih in 4 years maybe managed to kill one or two thousands of O’s brothers and cousins while the US and only in the past 4 years killed tens of thousands and captured or killed hundreds in their command structure.
You dig yourself a deeper hole by saying that “Lebanon” is the only country that went on the offensive, which is a lie. Lebanon as a country never took a decision to enter the Syrian war on anyone’s side, even less go on the offense against Isis. Hezbollah, a terrorist militia, on orders from Iran went to Syria to prevent Assad to fall, that’s their mission and objective, and it’s very far from your stated lie of going on the offense against Isis. One thing to remember, if the Sunnis in Lebanon did not decide to fight Isis IN Lebanon, there would be an explosion in dahyeh every week or so. So your safety in Dahyeh is thanks to a clear position from the part of the Sunnis and that is another truth. If the Sunnis in Lebanon were in their majority of the same kind as the Sunnis of Iraq in their love and support for Isis, the country would be burning right now. That’s another truth you’ll always deny.
As for the world trying to catching up, another divine route that you opened right? Hysterically laughable!!! Mazzeh propaganda at its best. The world has been on the move against Isis and the likes for 14 years now. Wonder why Isis is only strong in Iraq and Syria? Both country that used to be completely occupied by Iran? If anything, your camp is late fighting Isis as it didn’t or rather refused to believe that the sunni fanatics they smuggled in and out of Iraq to fight the American troops there turned the guns you gave them or allowed them to transport on you! Another truth you refuse to acknowledge, a truth known to the whole world.
If you’re wondering why the Arab world is a laughing stock it’s because a lot of people in it are liars and propagandists like you! Poets who hide facts and truths for divine victories. If you want things to change for the best for Lebanon, as a Lebanese yourself start by purging yourself of the lies that Mazzeh printed in your brain. Search for the truth, strengthen it with strong facts and arguments, stay away from the poetry, divine victories, paths… All bullshit that have led you and Lebanon to the garbage bin, literally. Another Truth you NEED to recognize!!!

          4. lol you are ridiculous!
Attacking one killing machine while defending the biggest killing machine.
What is your real name ya mekhh? It must be hypocrite.
Looks like your inferiority complex is in its advanced stages.

(Watch the simpletons accuse me of supporting hezbo coz I attacked mekhhhh. You know who you are you idiots)

          5. See your doing it again. Your playing the crying game. Where have I made a cooment about sunnis? I don’t consider isis or nusra to be Muslim. They are a cult and. It’s a disrespect to Muslims what they are doing. So stop your victim playing and look at facts. Stop looking at this racially. Look at facts on the ground. Fact is if these animals weren’t stopped what do you think would have happened to lebanon when they were holed up inside arsal coming and going as they please? Don’t be in denial that they weren’t being supported by parts of the lebanese that’s denial at its best. The same people still have 25 of our servicemen in arsal held captive. It’s a joke. They openly stated they want lebanon as part of their caliphate and you sit he and to this day cannot pick the difference. Wake up there is no Syrian opposition anymore. They allowed themselves to be swallowed up by these clowns. Where are they? Where’s idriss? Where’s their gatherings and war plans? Gone disappeared into the dust. That is the reality? The Americans could only find 54 people in the entire so called Syrian opposition to train? Is this bullshit fo real? And now as that article suggests there’s only 11 left after th others have been caught selling off weapons to isis? Do you honestly believe what you are saying? Your like jumblatt nusra kills 25 druze in cold blood and he wants to apologise. Then someone of significance gets killed and he says it’s the regime? Stil you cling onto the usa for help? The American ambassador in Libya was killed by these same people and the usa did nothing they sent these twits to syria after Libya. Do you think the usa cares about me u or the thousands that have been killed by BOTH sides? The Europeans are up in arms because they don’t know how to split and deal with 120000 refugees but poor old lebanon is dealing with over 1million? What planet are you on? See how ignorant you are. For 4 years the world has watched and done nothing. But now because there’s a refugee crisis they want to react? What’s even sadder is you sit playing the race game and none of the refugees want to go to fellow Arab “brotherly” countries do they? They would rather risk life to get to anywhere in Europe.

I truly wonder if you know how to read. I speak of something you reply with something else. Or is it the way they rewired your brain in mazzeh that made you read but understand what they want you to understand?
The conversation started by me saying that you twist the facts to make reality look different. In other words how you plainly lie since the whole world knows the truth.
I gave you series of truths that expose your lies and you keep trying to evade by opening parallel subjects, throwing racism accusation God knows why, and putting me in camps I don’t and never will belong to.
Which brings us back to the main subject: the intense brainwashing you and the likes of you have been subjected to. All this propaganda of divine victories when they’re actually biting the dust, and now eating garbage before reaching the dust.
If you have any respect for yourself, for that thing you call your brain, I repeat my invitation for you to clean yourself from all the shit they filled you with up there. To look, see and believe that your “heroes” have led you nowhere while feeding you unrealistic poetry. If you still refuse to see this reality then it’s too late for you. If you truely want a better country then you need to recognize the truth because as long as you keep the lie alive you’re only lying to yourself and your future.

You can’t call others terrorists and animals when you have a suicide belt strapped around you.
This is why you are brainwashed. You are only programmed to see the shit of others and to defend as heroic and divine your own shit.

          8. A SYRIAN rebel commander has admitted to surrendering US Military-supplied trucks and ammunition to an al-Qaeda affiliate.

25 per cent of the equipment assigned to the Syrian unit was turned over to the affiliate in exchange for safe passage, the U.S. Central Command revealed in a report on Friday.

The report underscores persistent problems with the United States-led coalition’s effort to train and equip Syrian rebels in the fight against Islamic State.

U.S. Central Command spokesman air force Colonel Pat Ryder said the incident is currently under investigation.

“We are using all means at our disposal to look into what exactly happened and determine the appropriate response,” Ryder said.

Al-Qaeda hostage released after 18 months

The commander who turned the equipment over to the al-Qaeda affiliate, Nusra Front, was one of about 70 rebel fighters who were in a second U.S. training course. He had only recently returned to Syria to fight the Islamic State militants.

Providing equipment to the Nusra Front is a violation of the program.

The training program has been criticised as offering too little too late and failing to provide enough protection for those trained rebels once back inside Syria. The selected rebels are said to undergo a thorough vetting process to ensure they focus on the fight against the IS.

U.S. officials have begun an overhaul of the effort, including suggesting that the newly trained fighters operate as the New Syrian Forces, or NSF, alongside Syrian Kurds, Sunni Arab and other anti-Islamic State forces.

The first batch of about 54 trainees has largely disbanded. Only 11 remain available to fight, but are not in Syria.Reuters. do you see what a joke this is?

Hezbollah was never about protecting Assad. it’s their goal and Iran to keep the supply lines going. It doesn’t matter if Al Assir was in charge they will defend him too. it was never about Assad. Even during the war when Amin Gemyal met with Nassrallah the later so was disgusted with the Syrian Soldiers that he basically didn’t say nice things about them. so to say protecting Assad yes in general but deep down it was all about protecting interest and i totally agree now on that.

          3. You are totally correct.
In fact Iran is prepared to destroy the whole of Syria (minus golan) if it means keeping the supply lines open. Russians and Iranians both have different interests in Syria they are desperate to protect.
