Survey: Syrian opposition want ‘no-fly’ zone

Share:

Members of the Syrian opposition support international armed intervention in their country, including establishing a “no-fly” zone, humanitarian corridors and training Free Syrian Army fighters, but they do not support an international presence on the ground, a survey showed.

The survey of the Syrian opposition was conducted by the International Republican Institute (IRI), a nonprofit, nonpartisan organization that supports democracy around the world.

It is funded by the U.S. Congress, the State Department and private donations. A quarter of the respondents gave the umbrella opposition organization, the Syrian National Council (SNC), high ratings for legitimacy. But the survey also showed that the council is struggling to consolidate its appeal to a broad section of Syrians who support the opposition movement.

Asked which country treats the opposition best, the respondents cited France, Qatar and Turkey, followed by Britain, Libya, Germany, the United States, and Saudi Arabia. China, Russia and Iran were chosen as countries that treat the opposition the worst.

If an international alliance does intervene militarily in Syria, the respondents said it should be led by Turkey.

The respondents said they were 81% Sunni Arabs and 85% male, and educated. Two thirds said they had a university certificate or certificate of post graduate education.

IRI carried out the survey from June 1 to July 2 with the international survey research firm Pechter Polls of Princeton, N.J.

Because of security issues, IRI said the survey was conducted electronically and was not a random sample. Instead, it used “snowball” methodology, which the group described as “relying strictly on dissidents who were known to IRI.”

Key individuals were used to initiate the referral chain, IRI said, “ultimately reaching a sample of 1,168 opposition members, approximately 315 of whom were inside Syria.”

Asked to rate priorities for the opposition in a post-Assad Syria the respondents put establishing a strong judicial system and giving fair trials to suspected war criminals at the top of the list. But they also supported punishing war criminals without judicial process.

If Syrian President Bashar al-Assad eventually leaves office, 82% of Syrian respondents living outside the country said they would return at least temporarily.

The survey can be found at: http://www.iri.org/news-events-press-center/news/survey-syrian-opposition-reveals-desire-international-intervention

“Two thirds said they had a university certificate ….” // “The respondents said they were …… educated.”
Ah yes …. like the ones from AUB or various other ‘controlled’ semi-learning centres, no doubt, which need even to be careful who they ask to come speak to students for fear of upsetting some Wizard of Hezzy.
How many can change a tire, plumb a sink, or even (gasp) discover electricity?
So .. it’s a ‘targeted sampling’ from the sound of it. Same as used for selling diapers.

How can the IRI be really a “nonprofit, nonpartisan organization” when it pushes ‘democracy’ with the word ‘Republican’ in it’s name??
Meanwhile, “Because of security issues ….” by paranoid Americans, the survey only reaches those relative few who have or know how to use a computer, in a survey conducted in ‘approved’ sites. (Did you ever get the ‘not in your zone’ message? 😉
I wouldn’t have thought this survey to be one to base a headline on … or even a thought by ‘news-hounds’ … with only 27% of respondents actually inside the war-zone, and such a small sampling of people. Hell, there’s more than 1168 in one university !!
Oh I know … Pechter Polls of Princeton thinks everyone is a computer junkie, in a world where only 26% of all humanity actually has access to one.
Why don’t you at least walk around and poll the 200,000 refugees ???? Might find some ‘university types’ there too. Arabs, even.

i used to consider you an educated person till you made this remark concerning AUB…maybe you did not have the chance to be accepted at AUB….i understand…. but AUB is a top international university at least it used to be…i dont think in its golden ages any american university could have matched with it or maybe only few of them….even at its golden ages AUB used to be controlled and i will give you an example in a few….but if you know how university systems function, all have agendas and all brain wash their students….when i was student at AUB, i do not think you were born at that time but never mind this, a prominent professor said that we are descendants from apes, in an obvious reference to darwin…that was shocking at that time in a protestant lead university and some of the audience replied…if your grandfather was an ape mine was not…..the professor in question was ultimately fired

Well, I was sure I’d boggle one mind crammed full of university BS … 🙂 And Darwin was not far off the mark, it seems. Evolution IS a fact … it goes on even today … With or Without a closed mind that fires a professor (or a Darwin) who’s basic job is to make you think. Too bad he didn’t have the chance. But I can see the ‘university pride’ in the way you ‘expound’ with such irrelevance on topics.
I avoided university altogether. Happily. The need of a piece of paper to live a full and productive life is vastly overrated.
You inform us of very little ‘new’. And now, not even the prospect that you think you could learn something from someone else – or understand a joke about Leb-Electric, which has become a sad joke on everyone – seems lost. We didn’t need your ‘professorial’ theorizing from a mind locked in stasis.

Here’ a bit from ‘Tom Henry’s Electrical History book’ …. available where information is shared.
“Electrical history goes back before Christ and brings us to the computer age. Along this journey you will discover it took several people, along the way, to make the light bulb glow.”
Of course, now everyone thinks the ‘Ark of the Covenant’ was a big storage battery. And there have been found artifacts in various ancient places which indicate some knowledge of electrical use.
        Another …
“Benjamin Franklin was one of seventeen children. He quit school at age ten to become a printer. His life is the classic story of a self-made man achieving wealth and fame through determination and intelligence.”
        And another ….
“Thomas Alva Edison (1847-1931) was one of the most well known inventors of all time with 1093 patents. Self-educated, Edison was interested in chemistry and electronics.During the whole of his life, Edison received only three months of formal schooling, and was dismissed from school as being retarded, though in fact a childhood attack of scarlet fever had left him partially deaf.”

So … although I have some friends who spent the money for ‘higher education’, I may agree with you that ‘university systems all brain wash their students’. YOU may in fact be a prime example of the ones who BELIEVE that piece of paper at the end of some years makes them superior. It’s a tendency for the students to say that to themselves while chatting in the lunch-rooms, I guess, in the weird comradely feelings within their ‘social orders’. (these days often limited to 149-character ‘twits’ about nothing)
And yet, as YOU note, many fail miserably in application after walking those vaunted halls.
Were the ones who fired your professor capable? Are the ones who decide now who may speak on what they know, in an attempt to impart workable information to only half-aware minds, capable? Are your ‘brainwashed students’ capable of making any rational choice at all on this? Certainly seems not.

Humans discovered ‘fire’ and it lit a cave. When did your ‘Hassan Kandil’ discover vegetable oil burned? Before or after the God, Ra, lit his world? Bees made wax too. You think no-one else noticed it burned?
Geagea might have learned something in 5 years of prison – a quiet time of reflection can do wonders.
The free mind can as well, evidenced best perhaps by Edison.
That you attempt to put mine down by it’s age (and I suspect you are wrong on that too 😉 is simply fishing for any excuse to rail against my observations. As I notice you continue to do.
Now that you KNOW I am not ‘educated’, you can simply ignore me. Thank you.

if you think i would lose my time to read somebody who copies and pastes and tells me electricity was before Christ lol i wouldnt ….you are just another hopeless case who thinks little knowledge is facts….part of knowledge is ignorance and part of truth is a lie..i wont dwell on you further because you are a total fiasco….i also noticed you are unable to understand anything…you just copy and paste from websites and you do not understand what you parrot…i bet stasis is in your legs from prolonged sitting behind internet as well as in your cerebral arteries calcified by stubborness and allergy to knowledge….again reiterating myself the knowledge you get from internet is just good for women waiting in front of the bakers to have something to babble on…exactly what you are exhibiting here…i bet you are someone who couldnt get enrolled in a university program leaving a very deep scar in your temperament, your psyche and your personality….i may have just one advice, and you are here talking to a professional, even though your limited cognitive capabilities did not allow you to learn anything from my expertise, my advice is: please go seek a psychiatrist, you will feel a lot of relief and you will thank me….i understand your hate to God, so how would i expect you to love humans….

one major criticism to AUB would have been that it had more palestinians and other arabic students and only very few shiites….and it is maybe the university that graduated most terrorists of the world like george habash and samir geagea…now geagea never got a university degree from AUB and he calls himself doctor while he never got even a BS degree from AUB, a fake person with fake titles and fake representation of the christians; actually he is giving bad reputation to the christians while he is the one responsible for the exodus of christians as well as their loss of the war….when assaad al assaad the father of kamel al assaad was summoned to open schools for shiites he used to reply:””ibni kamel 3am yidross lamayn?” I am glad now shiites have the chance to go to AUB because Lebanon is ultimately their country and AUB should give priority to lebanese…but i hope you understand american policy…..if you want to fight america america will still give you weapons because if you notice well those who are supposedly fighting america like the falafils are orienting their weapons to the shias and alawis and christians…by so doing america is controlling the world…america does not need friends and allies, it needs ennemies, groups that call death to america the shaytan because these are factors of destabilisation that allow america to control the world…ultimately all empires have an end…shall we witness the end of the american empire during our life time? i really doubt…america has great principles but unfortunately it marsupialises rather prostitutes these great principles to one major principle:”the end justifies the means”” a policy followed by the left such as socialism and other  consorts which has proven to be behind temporary survival of the left after the fall of the communist empire…btw those who believe russia is going against america are dupe…russia is just another american pawn…all its economy is based on mac donald and coca cola or maybe mac putin

one major criticism to AUB would have been that it had more palestinians and other arabic students and only very few shiites….and it is maybe the university that graduated most terrorists of the world like george habash and samir geagea…now geagea never got a university degree from AUB and he calls himself doctor while he never got even a BS degree from AUB, a fake person with fake titles and fake representation of the christians; actually he is giving bad reputation to the christians while he is the one responsible for the exodus of christians as well as their loss of the war….when assaad al assaad the father of kamel al assaad was summoned to open schools for shiites he used to reply:””ibni kamel 3am yidross lamayn?” I am glad now shiites have the chance to go to AUB because Lebanon is ultimately their country and AUB should give priority to lebanese…but i hope you understand american policy…..if you want to fight america america will still give you weapons because if you notice well those who are supposedly fighting america like the falafils are orienting their weapons to the shias and alawis and christians…by so doing america is controlling the world…america does not need friends and allies, it needs ennemies, groups that call death to america the shaytan because these are factors of destabilisation that allow america to control the world…ultimately all empires have an end…shall we witness the end of the american empire during our life time? i really doubt…america has great principles but unfortunately it marsupialises rather prostitutes these great principles to one major principle:”the end justifies the means”” a policy followed by the left such as socialism and other  consorts which has proven to be behind temporary survival of the left after the fall of the communist empire…btw those who believe russia is going against america are dupe…russia is just another american pawn…all its economy is based on mac donald and coca cola or maybe mac putin

btw for your own govern a so called hassan kandil a shiite from south Lebanon is the one behind discovering electricity after inventing the oil lamps so famously known as kandil and that your grand parents used for years to have light…that is if you are lebanese not one of those mossad agents infiltrating this blog frequently behind a lamb mask…btw during the war the american university hospital, a class A american accredited hospital and medical school, used to receive many of the messed up surgeries in israel
