Municipal election: Sidon headed toward an election battle

Two major groups announced they were competing for Sidon municipal elections set for May 23 .

Mohammed al-Saudi tried but failed to forge consensus list and will now be facing the “Popular Will” list which is backed by the Popular Nasserite Organization.

The “Popular Will” is headed by Abdul Rahman al-Ansari and includes Mona Maarouf Saad al-Masri, Osama Saad’s sister.

MP Bahia Hariri’s son, Ahmed will be on Saudi’s list.

Saudi , a Sidon businessman said he was running for elections under a modified electoral list after incorporating three candidates from Jamaa Islamiya.

“I was the one who asked for Future Movement official Ahmed Hariri to run for Sidon city council seat under my list,” Saudi announced.

Al-Saudi unveiled during a meeting with Former PM and Sidon MP Fouad Saniora and former minister MP Bahia Hariri at his home in Hlaliyeh east of Sidon that he offered Osama Saad a number of compromises in the hopes of sparing the southern port city an election battle.

Saudi said he was not sure whether consensus efforts conducted by Speaker Nabih Berri and Prime Minister Saad Hariri were still ongoing.
